Ten Things About Going to College that Nobody Told Me!
college-degree-300x2581. The national rank and prestige of the school you go to does not matter
as much as you think.
Don't choose a school just because it is the best one you got into.  Choose a school based on the one you like.  You are going to spend the next four years of your life either loving your school or wishing you did.

2.  You freshman year is a little like a tour of the Willie Wonka's factory.
You have to decide which character you want to be.  Are you going to gorge on you new found freedom and end up getting stuck in a chocolate pipe?  Are you going to taste that which has always been off limits and turn into a blueberry?  It's up to you.

3. It's highly likely that the job you get after you graduate won't have
anything to do with your college major.
I know a theatre major who is a PR agent.  I am friends with a agricultural major who is an internet manager for a international company.  I know a million business majors... but anything you do is business right?

4. College is not the answer to a "happy life".
Seriously, college is the best way to "get ahead" in life.  If you want nothing more than cold hard cash, studies show that a college grad makes 20K more a year than a non-grad.  But history shows that hard work, vision, and ingenuity are not dependent on a degree.  In the end, what's most important to you?  Take it from me, money is not required for happiness!

5. If you don't have passion for what you're learning, you're learning the wrong stuff.
The old saying is, "Don't let your education get in the way of your learning." Or something like that.  The truth is, you need to be passionate about something.  Find what that is, then do what it takes to make that passion happen. If the only way is many years of tedious college courses, be passionate about the end result.

6. If you feel lost in life, college won't help you find direction. It will
most likely help you escape from finding direction in life.
"I don't know what I want to do!" "Then go to college and they'll tell you what you want to do son."  Again with the passion thing. If you don't know what your passionate about, try looking at your hobbies.  What moves you to tears?  What makes you pause?  Pray about it!  You have to have direction.

7. It's your life, you need to make decisions based on what's right for
you, not what others tell you is right for you.
Hey, we have to honor our parents.  Most parents know that their kids are about to become adults, the moment they step out of the house.  College is probably your first big adult decision.  Your friends, and especially your girlfriend/boyfriend usually have rather selfish ambitions for where you should go to college.

8. Ritalin and Adderall may seem like the holy grail, but realize that
these are amphetamines and they have side effects.
If you can't do it without drugs, don't do it.  What if your surgeon told you that the only way he made through med school was by taking amphetamines.

9. Going to class stoned is just wasting your time and money.
And your brain cells.  And your integrity.

10. God saves the best for those who leave the choice to him.
I promise.  In the end, you have to decide, but allow God to close doors and open others.

>>Bonus:

11.  Don't have any regrets.
When your older "I was young and wild" is a common excuse.  But let me translate: "I regret to say I am ashamed of my actions."  Look, the truth is, your youthful vigor is like currency, you can spend it wherever you choose.  Just know, you'll never get it back.
